So, I went away from the show a little disappointed, but not because of the music. Rather, it was my lack of nerve to say hello when her cornflower blue eyes met mine as the set wrapped at 11:00.
I digress. But before I continue any further, may I just say that Kenny looked like Terry Kiser (Bernie in Weekend At Bernie's) with the shades & the goatee... and the way that he played the accordion (flopping himself backwards, flailing his arms skyward) just added to that "dead guy" effect for me. This is not criticism -- just observation.
The set was great. Not the best sounding, but you do what you can when you're attempting to mix a live outdoor show. The CVB stuff came as a pleasant surprise.
Dave did have a little fun with the audience. To expand on the "LA of the South" comments... Dave characterized some of the audience as "goatee-pulling" guys who stand up front with a look that says, "I can do that better." He challenged the audience, yelling, "Well then get up here and DO IT!!! But if you suck, we're going to kick your ass off the stage HARD!" Needless to say, no one jumped up, although I'm sure there were a number of guys that could have taken him to task. Perhaps. But there were those who would be well advised to keep their seats. I am speaking now to the opening act known as The Honeyrods, who had that "Now featured at your local cutout bin!" kind of vibe, y'know, like long on "tude," short on talent. Not that I could do any better. But I never thought that for a second, even if I do sport a goatee which I at times give a thoughtful tug. :-)
In short, it was a loud, bawdy, wonderful time. Great show. Well worth seeing. And if anyone knows that blonde/blue demi-goddess (?)
